Official Poker Rules

The basic official poker rules are relatively simple. One player becomes the dealer and the dealer does not play that hand. Of course if you are playing in a casino, you already know who the dealer is, and they do not play in the hands. Plays consist of each game to the next shuffle. As the game progresses, the pot or prize gets higher, and at the end of the game the one with the highest win gets the prize and should a tie happen they split the pot. If a player wants in the game, he must ante, which simply means contribute to the pot. A rake is a percentage of the pot that’s given to the poker room. Often this is 10%. Once the last round of poker is played, a showdown will occur, which just means that all must then show their hands.

There are different betting terms in poker, such as check, raise, fold, and call. Part of learning to play is greater understanding of the official poker rules Texas Hold Em. A call is matching the last bet, a fold is to let go of any claim to the pot, a raise is to double the last bet, and a check is basically declaring that you pass. Betting structures will differ in pot limit, no limit and limited forms of poker.

Each card has a rank, with the highest and lowest being an Ace, under the Ace is the King, followed by the Queen, and then Jack, then they follow down in numerical order, i.e. 10-9-8, etc. A straight, for example is a sequential set of cards, whereas a full house would have two cards making a pair, and three of a kind following that. Official poker rules say that a straight flush is all five in sequential order in addition to being of the same suit. In a royal flush, you’ll find all five cards being in the same suit showing an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10.

Whatever does not fit in the descriptions found above will count as a high-card hand in official poker rules. An example of that would be a hand that comprises of Ace, Jack, 8, 4, and 2.  In this case, the Jack is the Kicker, which merely means that it is considered higher than say a hand that comprises of Ace, 10, 8, 4, and 2.
